Welcome to my Economics Website. Inside you will find the assignments, notes, powerpoint presentations and projects that you will need if you were to miss class. I have sorted these by weeks. If at some points we get off during class, I will try to fix that on this website the best I can. Each week, we will have either a quiz or a test. My syllabus is below if you need me.
Room: B208
Make Up Times: M-F Before School, 8-8:30
Email: [email protected]
Description:
This course fulfills the Texas State mandate for a half credit in Economics before you can graduate from high school. The course is broken up into two parts. The first part of the class will focus on macro and micro economics, which is economics on a small scale and on a large scale. The second half of the class is made up of personal finance, which will focus primarily on getting you ready financially when you leave high school to make economic decisions on your own.
Organization:
This is a course where information will be presented via powerpoint presentations, by doing activities on your own, and by working on projects. There will be frequent quizzes, an ongoing portfolio, 2 large projects (one per 9 weeks), and finally a few tests thrown in just for fun.
Course Topics:
1st Nine Weeks Macro/Micro Economics Project: Stock Market Project
2nd Nine Weeks: Personal Finance Project: Real Life Project
Text and Required Supplies:
Yes you need to check out a text book. While I do put my ppt presentations online if you miss a day of class, inevitably you will need a book if you need clarification on something. You will also need them in order to work on some assignments in your portfolio. Long story short… get a book.
You will also need a folder with brads for your portfolio and a composition book to take notes in. It would be in your best interest to have both of them asap. I will occasionally let you use your notes on quizzes, not all the time, but it will reward those who are keeping up with their notes. Finally, have notebook paper and a pencil or pen every day.
Grading Plan: Major Grades: 60% Daily Grade: 40%
1. Portfolio Major Grade
Portfolio checks are done every three weeks. The portfolio will need to be organized, have cover page, be numbered, and have all the necessary work that has been done up to that date. I will provide a table of contents showing you what should be in the portfolio at the time of the check. This syllabus will also be a part of your portfolio, so don’t lose it!
2. Quizzes Daily Grades
You will have a quiz over covered material weekly. These will be a majority of your daily grades.
3. Projects Major Grade
There will be two major projects in this class. You’ll have approximately 7 weeks to complete each.
Stock Market Project:
You will be working with a partner or be yourself and research different companies. You will then buy stock in those companies and see how the stock rises and falls each week. We will be in the computer lab almost every Tuesday working on this. If you miss a day, it will be your responsibility to make up any time you missed. You will turn in a 1” binder with you work at the end for a major grade.
Life After High School Project
In this project you are to try to project what your life will look like in 5 years. This will be either after you have graduated college or after you have been working for 5 years. You will have to find a job, a place to live, a vehicle, and create a budget with all your expenses you will have. Your grade will be a combination of a 1” binder with answered questions and a powerpoint you will create to show to the class.
4. Tests Major Grade
I will let you know well in advance when a test is coming. I will give you a review, but will not guarantee you will have a day to work on the review.
5. Final Exam 15% of total grade
You will receive a review for the final exam the week before the test. Your portfolio will also be a percentage of your final grade. I will expect the portfolio to be amazing!
Classroom Rules of Conduct:
- Headphones are not allowed anytime, don’t ask.
- Phones will be taken up if used during lecture or when you are supposed to be working unless I say otherwise.
- Food will not be allowed to be visible at any time. Closed containers on any liquids.
- Keep put downs and profanity out of the class
- I know seniors want to be treated like adults, I will if you respect me as an adult as well.
- If you are failing, I’ll talk to you first, if nothing changes, parents second.
- If you sleep in my class, I reserve the right to wake you up or take a picture of you and email it to your parents.
- You may use the restroom as needed unless I am lecturing… then hold it.
Late Work/Make Up Policy:
Generally any work you don’t finish in class becomes homework. Projects can also be homework if you are absent often or don’t work efficiently. If it’s late, it’s a 70, second day 50.
If you fail a test or quiz, you may make it up one time. It may not be the same test or quiz.
Suggestions for Success:
If you keep up with your notes and do the work that is asked of you, you won’t have a problem. Most students fail my class because they are distracted during lectures and then get behind on projects. Don’t be the student that asks me what they can do to pass on the last week of the semester. I won’t help you. You will take the class again in the spring
